3. Top Georgia, Alabama races head to runoffs
As voters prepare to weigh in on competitive U.S. Senate and gubernatorial races in Georgia this fall, the identity of the Republican nominee remains unresolved in both contests.
In the race to challenge Sen. Jon Ossoff, D-Ga., Republicans Mike Collins and Derek Dooley advanced to a runoff election scheduled for June 16. Ossoff won renomination unopposed.
The RealClearPolitics average of polls measuring voter sentiment in a hypothetical matchup between Ossoff and Collins shows the Democratic senator leading his potential Republican challenger by 2.8 percentage points. The RealClearPolitics average of polls examining a potential Ossoff-Dooley matchup shows Ossoff leading by 6.7 percentage points.
Georgia Democrats have selected Keisha Lance Bottoms as their nominee in the state’s open gubernatorial race. Meanwhile, Republicans Burt Jones and Rick Jackson will advance to a runoff to determine the party’s nominee to replace term-limited Gov. Brian Kemp. Georgia has not elected a Democratic governor since 1998.
In neighboring Alabama, unofficial results show Republican Tommy Tuberville and Democrat Doug Jones easily winning their parties’ gubernatorial primaries.
In the race to fill Alabama’s open U.S. Senate seat, Trump-backed Rep. Barry Moore, R-Ala., is advancing to a runoff, while the second-place candidate has yet to be determined pending final results. Democrats Everett Wess and Dakarai Larriett will also advance to a runoff. The runoff elections will take place on June 16.
