3. Tony Perkins: A ‘good first step’ to revisiting Obergefell
In a statement posted on X Tuesday, Family Research Council President Tony Perkins offered a slightly different take than other conservative advocacy organizations when reacting to the ruling.
After describing the decision as “a victory for biology and women’s sports,” Perkins contended that “The Supreme Court could not dodge the cultural chaos ball it created with the redefinition of marriage.”
Perkins was referring to the U.S. Supreme Court’s 2015 Obergefell v. Hodges decision that legalized same-sex marriage nationwide. He suggested that the ruling on trans-identified males in women’s sports was a “good first step” to revisiting and possibly overturning Obergefell: “Like the American people, who are connecting the dots and changing their minds on the reordering of society with the redefining of marriage, maybe the court will eventually find its way back.”
