5 things to know about Greenland, why Trump wants to acquire it for the US

3. Legislative effort to get the US to take control of Greenland

Introduced by Rep. Andy Ogles, R-Tenn., early last year, the Make Greenland Great Again Act would authorize Trump to “enter into negotiations with the Kingdom of Denmark to secure the acquisition of Greenland by the United States.” The measure would also require the president to “transmit to the appropriate congressional committees the agreement, including all related materials and annexes,” within five days of securing it.

The legislation would give Congress a 60-day window to review the agreement once it's secured. If Congress doesn't issue a joint resolution of disapproval within that window, then the agreement will take effect as executed.

As of Friday, the bill has attracted 16 co-sponsors: Reps. Brian Babin, R-Texas, Jim Baird, R-Ind., Dan Crenshaw, R-Texas, Michael Guest, R-Miss.; Mike Haridopolos, R-Fla., Andy Harris, R-Md., Diana Harshbarger, R-Tenn., Nick Langworthy, R-N.Y., Mike Lawler, R-N.Y., Anna Paulina Luna, R-Fla., Barry Moore, R-Ala., Burgess Owens, R-Utah, Michael Rulli, R-Ohio, Greg Steube, R-Fla., Claudia Tenney, R-N.Y., and Randy Weber, R-Texas.
