5 things to know about Greenland, why Trump wants to acquire it for the US

5. How residents of Greenland and the US feel about potential annexation

Public opinion polling has yielded conflicting results on the views of Greenland residents about becoming part of the U.S. A poll of 416 Greenlandic residents conducted by Patriot Polling from Jan. 6–11, 2025, found that 57.3% of respondents approved of the U.S. “acquiring Greenland from Denmark,” while 37.4% disapproved of the idea.

Conversely, a survey of 497 Greenlandic adults conducted by the Verian Group from Jan. 22-26, 2025, revealed that an overwhelming majority of respondents (85%) responded “No” when asked if they wanted “Greenland to leave the Danish realm and instead become part of the United States.” Nine percent of those surveyed expressed support for Greenland leaving Denmark and joining the U.S.

When it comes to Americans’ views on taking over Greenland, a survey of 6,996 American adults conducted on Aug. 29, 2025, by YouGov found that a plurality of respondents (45%) opposed the U.S. purchasing Greenland, while 24% supported the idea. When asked how they felt about “the U.S. using military force to take control of Greenland,” the overwhelming majority of respondents (72%) expressed opposition to the idea, while just 7% supported it.
