Shortly after being installed as bishop, Budde gave an interview with The Washington Post in which she stated that she wants to “build up” progressive Christianity, especially in regard to countering the political influence of conservative Christians.

"I want to build up the liberal church again so we can be a legitimate conversation partner in the public arena, because right now it's dominated by ... what many would call the Christian right," Budde said at the time.

"It's legitimate for them to be there, but they're drowning us out. They're better at organizing churches than we are, and I'm going to change that!"

Robert Lundy, communications officer for the theologically conservative American Anglican Council, took exception to Budde’s statement that she wants “to build up the liberal church.”

“What happened to building up Christ’s Church?” Lundy asked The Christian Post in an interview back in 2011, adding that he considered the statement to be “ridiculous.”
