Africa Mission Report: Kenya and Zambia

Kenya-- Kenya's presidential and parliamentary elections, viewed as the most important since independence in 1963, marred with outbreaks of violence, continues to proceed. For many nationals, the historic election is seen as a test for new leadership, as a new constitution is presented alongside a new government.

Lee De Young of Word of Hope notes the concerns of some of their workers. "Although Kenya remains a predominantly Christian country, nevertheless the new constitution has portions that have been inserted into the draft currently before people, which embodies quite a bit of Islamic, Sharia law," Young says.

In terms of missions works, DeYoung suggests: "That's something to pray about, that that won't actually impede the Gospel. Regarding the current political climate, people are cautiously hopeful that either of the leading presidential candidates may lead to a better government."

Zambia--Operation Blessing International and its partnering organization supports a hunger relief effort to two orphanages in light of the famine that now affects millions in southeastern Africa. The Nyamphande Orphanage, associated with the Full Gospel Church of South Africa feeds 361 children daily, while the partnering orphanage provides homes to 156 children in rural Zambia, and also feeds more than 250 additional street children.
