3. Los Angeles, California
The “City of Angels” is anything but, according to WalletHub, which ranked Los Angeles the third-most sinful city in the U.S.
Part of that ranking stems from LA having the 14th-most hate crimes per capita and the eighth-most mass shootings between January 2023 and June 2025, despite some of the most stringent gun laws in the U.S.
Residents in LA are also less generous than those in other American cities: less than a quarter of all residents volunteer their time, the fifth-lowest in the nation. Among the 182 cities studied, LA also has the 24th-lowest percentage of residents who donate their adjusted gross income to charitable causes.
