Android O Release Date News, Name and Features Rumors: New Android Announcement Expected in May at Google I/O

The new version of Google's Android operating system (OS) is pretty much expected to launch the same time of the year as the previous one. With the Google I/O event coming up on May 17, an Android O announcement is expected in between that date and up to the event's last day on May 20.

The public release of Android Nougat was in August of last year, 2016. With the previous Android releases falling closely into the same time frame, Android fans will be looking ahead to the Google I/O event starting on May 17 for word of the new Android O. PC Advisor has speculated on the possible final name for the next Android version.

While a few tasty treats start with the letter O, not many are sweet enough to fit Android's tradition of naming their OS updates with the most sugary of names. Hiroshi Lockheimer from Google appears to be quietly suggesting that the next release could be called Android Oreo.

Venture Beat has covered a few features that might make their way to the Google OS that is currently under development. These features come from a source familiar with the ongoing Android O development, according to the news outlet. Even then, these features may not end up making it through final release. Nonetheless, there are a few interesting new twists that Google may be coming up with according to this rumor.

One rather utilitarian feature is referred to as Copy Less, and it looks to be a very useful feature for phone users who do a lot of social media. It is reportedly aimed at making it easier to copy and paste text from one app to another, although it is not made clear if this is a keyboard feature or a shortcut built into Android itself.

Another interesting feature is one that browsers have in some form for a few years now, and it is a way for users to control their device using finger gestures. Much like the "OK Google" voice command, it is aimed at making it faster to use the commonly accessed features of a user's phone.
