Betty White Joins Twitter, Which She Said 'Would Never Happen'

Betty White has officially joined the Twitter universe. After several years of doing things she said she would never do- host "Saturday Night Live" and star in two hit comedy series- White has given in to popular demand and posted her first tweet.

"Hello, Twitter! And they said it would never happen. Oh wait, that was me," tweeted the 90-year-old entertainer. White has grown in popularity since her time as Rose Nylund on the hit TV series "The Golden Girls." After the series ended in 1992, she went on to have guest-star roles on "Ally McBeal" and "Malcolm in the Middle."

Now she stars in "Hot in Cleveland" with Valerie Bertinelli, Jane Leeves, and Wendie Mallick. It is the first time White has been the lead in a TV comedy since "The Golden Girls" ended. The show is currently in its third season, receiving rave reviews from fans.

In 2010, a Facebook campaign entitled "Betty White to Host SNL (Please)" began. It took the actress until May to say yes to being on the iconic comedy sketch show, and ratings went through the roof with her appearance. Former cast members Tina Fey and Amy Poehler even came back to shoot the special Mother's Day episode of the show.

White's opening monologue made fun of the campaign that had gotten her to host.

"I didn't even know what Facebook was," she joked. "Now that I do, I think sounds like a huge waste of time."

In addition to "Hot in Cleveland," White is now host of a new series "Betty White's Off Their Rockers," in which senior citizens pull pranks on unsuspecting young people. Her humor has helped the series launch and is one of the reasons fans love the "Golden Girl."

"Hey Ryan Seacrest-my new show airs tomorrow and I hear we're in the same time slot. I've always dreamed of sharing a night with you," White tweeted. She is known for her ability to deliver a ridiculous line with the utmost sincerity, and fans can expect that to be expressed through her Twitter feed.

Even though she only joined Twitter 18 hours ago, White already has over 128,000 followers. Her new show "Off Their Rockers" airs tonight at 8:00 p.m. EST on NBC.
