2. Biden touts plans to build a railroad from Asia to Europe to fight climate change

Throughout the press conference, reporters repeatedly asked Biden about the U.S. relationship with China. Answering a question about China’s suggestion that the president’s actions stem from a “Cold War mentality” viewing the nation as the greatest global threat, the president pivoted to the topic of climate change while continuing to downplay the idea of tensions between the two nations.

Biden touted “a new path that’s going to save everybody money” and increase “the Global South’s capacity to grow” in the form of a “new railroad from India all the way across the Mediterranean” that will establish new “shipping lanes and pipelines across the Mediterranean through Europe up into Great Britain and beyond.” He contended that “that has nothing to do with hurting China or helping China” but rather “has to do with dealing with everything from climate change to making sure that these countries can succeed economically and grow.”

“That railroad we’re talking about going across from the middle … from India, throughout the Middle East, and to … across the Mediterranean … and all through Europe, that’s going to have a hydrogen pipeline there,” he added. “This is going to significantly reduce the amount of carbon emitted in the air, but it costs a lot of money to put that down.”

During his response to the question about China’s comments about a “Cold War mentality,” Biden maintained that “the only existential threat humanity faces even more frightening than a … nuclear war is global warming going above 1.5 degrees in the next 20 … 10 years.” He described the prospect of continued global warming as “real trouble,” warning that “there’s no way back from that.”
