4. Biden resurrects ‘lying dog-faced pony soldiers’ line

The president revived a phrase he used on the campaign trail during the 2020 Democratic presidential primaries when discussing those who remain skeptical that human activity has contributed to global warming, which he views as a major threat: “There’s a lot of lying, dog-faced pony soldiers out there … about global warming, but not anymore. All of a sudden, they’re realizing it’s a problem. And there’s nothing like seeing the light.”

Biden previously referred to a voter in New Hampshire as a “lying, dog-faced pony soldier” after she nodded her head when he asked her if she had ever been to a Democratic caucus before. “No, you haven’t. You’re a lying, dog-faced pony soldier,” he replied. In a video following the exchange, the college student admitted she had never been to a Democratic caucus before, saying that she nodded her head because she was “intimidated by the vice president.”

Before calling his political opponents on global warming “lying, dog-faced pony soldiers” in an overseas press conference Sunday, the president attributed the phrase to “a movie about John Wayne” that took place during the Civil War era. While Biden did not mention the title of the film, he explained that the late actor played an “Indian scout” in the movie and how an Indian looks at Wayne’s character and refers to a Union soldier as a “lying, dog-faced pony soldier.”

At the time, The Daily Mail reported that while Biden and his campaign have identified an unnamed John Wayne movie as the source of the insult, the line appears to have come from a 1952 film “Pony Soldier” that does not feature Wayne.
