Whether analysts warned that the worst of the "bomb cyclone" might be yet to come, with cities like New York bracing for a record-breaking low of -1 degree overnight on Saturday.

Sustained winds of 15 to 25 mph could make it feel as cold as -20.

"We are predicting a record low come Saturday night-Sunday morning," AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Dave Dombek said.

"Two words that sum it up are: bitter cold."

Elsewhere, Boston broke a 100-year-old record, with temperatures not rising above -20F for seven days.

Chicago hit a new low for New Years's Day, dropping below -1F, with the wind chill taking the temperature down to -20F.
