'Breaking Bad' Free Rehab Offered by NM Mental Health Clinic

"Breaking Bad" free rehab is being offered by a New Mexico clinic to those addicted to substance abuse in the area who are over 18. A mental health clinic decided to offer two "Breaking Addiction" award scholarships to the winners of a contest at the conclusion of the iconic drama after the final season concludes in about a month.

The "Breaking Bad" free rehab will use the methamphetamine-themed show for good. Sage Neuroscience Center and HealthShire.com partnered up to create an essay contest. All applicants in the Albuquerque area- that's where the majority of "Breaking Bad" takes place and is filmed- can submit their story of how they became addicted, which will be grouped with others and posted online.

Whichever two residents have the most compelling stories will win the "Breaking Addiction" scholarship awards, according to the Associated Press. The two benefactors of the scholarship are hoping that tying the popularity of the Emmy award-winning show to addiction will help the subject become less taboo.

"It's really hard to get people to talk about it. They don't want to, it's in the shadows," Julian Sutter, communication director with HealthShire, told KRQE news. "To be able to tie it on to something people talk about on a regular basis, 'Oh, did you see Breaking Bad?'"

"It creates a neutral platform to talk about the topic," he added.

The scholarships are only available for those who cannot afford treatment themselves, and the 12-week scholarship winners will be selected after the finale of the show, which has only four episodes left.

All applicants and winners will be kept anonymous. The fifth and final season of "Breaking Bad" will airs on Sunday at 9 p.m. EST on AMC.
