Mat Staver, the founder of the Christian conservative legal organization Liberty Counsel, said the ruling "bodes well" for laws similar to Tennessee's in 26 other states that have emerged in recent years to ban what he called "barbaric practices."

He called the decision a "victory for children everywhere and for the rule of law."

"The Constitution does not allow for the harming of children with dangerous drugs and irreversible, experimental surgeries," Staver said in a statement published Wednesday. "Banning experimental gender interventions on children for both sexes is not an Equal Protection issue, it is a child safety issue."
