‘It was a massacre’: 4 things to know about deadly church attack in Jordan
Suspects 'returned to finish off’ victims
4. Attack on church in Jordan was ‘truly a massacre,’ witness says
Saed al-Halaseh, a witness to Friday’s attack on the Greek Orthodox Church in Jordan, said three masked men opened fire at the people gathered for a funeral, the AP reported.
Al-Halaseh recalled that the three gunmen wore masks and carried automatic weapons, and that they began “firing indiscriminately” at the individuals assembled outside. According to the witness, the attackers “weren’t satisfied with just the initial casualties.”
“They went back and fired on everyone again. They returned to finish off those who had already been hit,” he said. “Even then, they weren’t finished; they came and stood right here, firing at the facade of the church, this part right here.”
The survivor said that he crawled behind a nearby car during the shooting, but many people he knew were killed during the attack.
“The sense of security we once had, the very foundation we grew up with, has, sadly, vanished,” he stated. “They were simply mourners at a funeral. I cannot fathom what the perpetrators could have possibly wanted from them. I don’t believe any religion in the world could condone what happened. It was truly a massacre.”
