Deconstructing the Official Luke Cage Trailer; Luke's Superhero Origin Teaser
Luke Cage will premiere next month on Netflix. A new trailer has just been released for the Marvel series and it is just straight up amazing! Luke can be seen trying to keep the peace in Harlem but the villain Cottonmouth starts an all-out war. Claire Temple tells Luke, "Sometimes, if you want justice, you have to get it yourself."
Jessica Jones Aftermath
In the latest Comic-Con, it was revealed that Luke Cage will take-off from the events of Jessica Jones. In that series, Luke already lost his wife, dealt with mind control by Kilgrave, and met his future wife in Jessica Jones.
In the upcoming superhero series, Luke Cage has just returned to Harlem where, besides having to deal with his past, also has to face off crime boss Cornell "Cottonmouth" Stokes.
Luke Cage's Superhero Origin
Fans will get a glimpse of the experiment made on Luke that made him indestructible in the trailer. The superhero, who was also known previously as Power Man, appears in a classic 1970's costume complete with wrist bands, a tiara and hair! It is clear that the costume is a homage to the old Power Man costumes.
Villain and Love Interests
The trailer also showed a different looking Cottonmouth compared to his comic counterpart. In the comics, he is older with white hair. His teeth were carved out into fangs. It is still not certain if he will go through a physical transformation later in the series to make him closely resemble his familiar look. Nevertheless, he looks scary enough in the trailer especially when he is seen pounding a man to a pulp.
Misty Knight makes her debut in the trailer. Even if Luke will eventually end up with Jessica, Misty seems to be a romantic interest as well. She can be seen warning Luke that even though he is bulletproof, Harlem isn't.
In the comics, Misty is depicted as a strong, smart and independent woman. The character was linked to both Power Man and Iron Fist. In the Luke Cage Comic-con panel, she got the loudest cheers from the crowd.
Claire Templeton also appears to be close to Luke in the preview. It appears that Jessica Jones will have a lot of competition in her hands for Luke Cage.
Darkness and Justice
The final shot of the trailer is Luke reading an Easy Rawlins novel. The novels are said to be about a detective that has become an icon for blending dark traditional conventions with social justice and racial equality. Sounds so much like Luke Cage, isn't it? Luke Cage premieres on September 30.
