Donate, bury or burn? How to dispose of a worn-out Bible

Burn your Bible (reverently, of course)

While Christians consider the Bible to be the living Word of God (Hebrews 4:12), we’re to use it as a means of drawing near Him rather than using it as an object of worship itself, said Bock.

“It contains God’s Word but is not God,” said Bock. “We only worship God.”

That said, when it becomes necessary to part ways with a copy of the Word, we want to do it in a manner that reflects a reverence and appreciation for its contents.

In times past, burning was often the preferred method for disposing of old Bibles: one ancient Irish tradition was to take collections of old books and other sacraments and throw them into a bonfire to mark the traditional birth of John the Baptist on June 23.

Oftentimes a priest will bless the fire before the ashes are disposed of via burial.
