Rachel Laser, CEO of Americans United for Separation of Church and State, a liberal legal organization that advocates for a strict separation between church and state, accused Trump of using the task force “to justify bigotry, discrimination, and the subversion of our civil rights laws.”

“If Trump really cared about religious freedom and ending religious persecution, he’d be addressing antisemitism in his inner circle, anti-Muslim bigotry, hate crimes against people of color and other religious minorities, but instead, he’s abolishing federal programs and protections that address those wrongs,” Laser said in a Thursday statement.

A lawyer who has advocated in favor of bills supporting abortion and run interfaith campaigns on “LGBTQ+ equality,” Laser argued that the purpose of the task force is not to combat Christian persecution.

“This is part of the Christian Nationalist crusade to remake our country,” the attorney said. “Not on our watch.”
