3. 'Hallelujah' — Leonard Cohen (1984)

Despite its name, Cohen's "Hallelujah" is far from a God-glorifying worship song, but rather what one critic called a "deeply sexual — and profoundly Jewish — hymn to a failed relationship."  

Still, between the track's title — Hebrew for "Praise Yah/Praise the LORD" — and references to Samson and King David, one could be forgiven for mistaking the song as a biblical ode.

Singer Kelly Mooney became a viral hit in 2012 when she changed the lyrics to "Hallelujah" to make them more appropriate for a performance with her church choir.
