4. Jake Tapper: Durham Report was ‘devastating to the FBI,’ ‘it does exonerate Donald Trump’

CNN anchor Jake Tapper reacted to the publication of the Durham report Monday by describing the document as “devastating to the FBI,” adding that “to a degree, it does exonerate Donald Trump.”

Before discussing the contents of the report, Tapper recalled that Trump and his allies frequently maintained that “Durham would exonerate him and his 2016 campaign and associates from any hint of improper behavior regarding the Russian government’s attempts to interfere in the 2016 election.”

While Tapper acknowledged that the report reflected negatively on federal law enforcement, he noted that the predictions from Trump’s inner circle that it would “lead to bombshell indictments of those who investigated Trump” never materialized: “The bombshell indictments did not happen. Durham did get one minor court victory, two court losses.”

Additionally, Tapper maintained that the Durham report “might not have produced everything of what some Republicans hoped for.”

Reflecting on the findings of the document and the reaction to it by staffers of congressional Democrats, Tapper also suggested that looking into the claims at the center of the Trump-Russia probe was not entirely out of bounds: “It is possible that the FBI had legitimate cause for concern and [it] is also possible that some individuals in the FBI got ahead over their skis and were not as professional as they should have been.”
