Galaxy S5 Active Release Date Arrives, AT&T Now Offering Device With $50 Off Gear Fit

The Galaxy S5 release date is finally upon us after weeks of speculation.

AT&T let the cat out of the bag earlier today and is now offering the rugged handset for $199 with a new two-year contract. It will be available in Camo Green, Ruby Red and Titanium Gray.

The S5 Active comes with mostly the same specs as the original model including the 5.1-inch Full HD Super AMOLED display, 16-megapixel rear shooter and Snapdragon 801 processor.

Samsung has added a special feature called the Activity Zone. There's a convenience key on the side of the device that launches outdoor mode that shows the Barometer and compass with links to other active lifestyle apps. The fingerprint scanner found on the regular GS5 is not on the Active model as this new mode replaces it.

AT&T is offering the new Active with a special promotion. Those who purchase it before July 24 with get $50 off Samsung Gear Fit. The carrier is also selling a bumper case that goes with its colors to make it even more of a durable handset.

The two year contract is not the only option for purchasing the Active. Customers can enroll in AT&T's Next program and pay the phone off with monthly installments as low as $27.50. They can also buy it outright without a contract for a lump $715 sum.

The Active models began last year with the S4 version. They function as water and dust proof versions of the high-end Samsung handsets and can be dunked under water without being damaged. The Galaxy S5 took cues from the S4 version as it features a similar cover for the USB port making it water and dust resistant.
