'Grey's Anatomy' Season 11: Episode 18 Recap 'When I Grow Up'

This week on "Grey's Anatomy," a school field trip to the hospital takes a dramatic turn when the kids witness two injured cops enter the emergency room. Meanwhile, Stephanie sets her eyes on one of the chaperones, and Derek is forced to beg Amelia for his job back.

At the hospital, a group of elementary school children are visiting for the day as part of a field trip. Derek is in the hospital too and is telling Owen how he'll be flying back and forth to D.C. to tie up some loose ends. Owen tells him that in order to get his job back, he has to ask for his little sister, Amelia's, approval because she's head of neuro now.

The kids are taken to the emergency room and April is telling them what sort of injuries are considered trauma when three policemen, all bloodied after they were shot at a bank robbery, are brought in. Dr. Webber asks Stephanie to take the children to see the babies and to keep them away from anything that might scare them.

Stephanie is a little miffed at this, but it helps that their chaperone is a handsome, well-dressed man, and Stephanie starts flirting with him a little.

Meanwhile, a teenage boy covered in gunshot wounds is in the emergency room. As there are no exit wounds, the team has to perform surgery on him immediately. It turns out that the boy is the one responsible for the bank robbery and the shooting.

Later, two of the police officers die. They happen to be brothers, and their mother comes in and is devastated by the news. The one officer who survived asks Callie about the victim who was brought in, and later he tells everyone that the kid, who was in the foster care system, was being helped by the two cops who died.

As Bailey is operating on the kid, it's clear that his kidney is damaged beyond repair. However, one of the policemen who died is a match for the kid.

Meredith talks to the cops' mother, and she asks if they happen to be organ donors. Bailey interrupts and tells them that a kidney is needed, and when the mother puts two and two together, she is adamant that the kid who murdered her sons will not get anything from them.

The officer who survived the shooting goes over to talk to the grieving mother, and soon he's able to convince her to donate one of her son's kidney to the shooter—it's what they would have wanted.

It's time for the kids to board their bus, and Stephanie asks their chaperone if he has any plans for the weekend. He says that he has prom-- and he's still in high school.

Derek goes over to his sister to ask for his job back, and Amelia tells him that it might be hard for them to work together since both of them have tempers. For now, she'll think about it.

"Grey's Anatomy" airs on Thursdays at 8/7c on ABC.
