'Grey's Anatomy' Season 12 Cast News, Update: Dr. Derek Shepherd's Replacement Finally Revealed?

New casting reports for the upcoming 12th Season of "Grey's Anatomy" cited what thought to be the replacement for Patrick Dempsey's beloved character, Derek Shepherd.

Fans were left utterly shocked seeing the departure of McDreamy in the previous season. And although viewers believed that no one could ever replace the surgeon, a casting update from TV Line sparked several speculations regarding Shepherd's purported replacement as male lead.

According to the media outlet, "Secrets and Lies" actor Martin Henderson has nabbed the "new series-regular surgeon role" in the upcoming season of the scripted drama.

Henderson, a New Zealand native, is no stranger to the "Shonda Land." The actor was known to have taken the main role on Shonda Rhime's short-lived 2011 medical drama "Off the Map."

TV Line was quick to speculate by saying that Henderson may reprise his Map role of Dr. Ben Keeton on long-running show.

The publication cited what Rhime's said back in a few months that "the entire Grey's Anatomy family" is now heading its way to an "uncharted territory as we head into this new post-Derek era."

"The possibilities for what may come are endless. As Ellis Grey would say: the carousel never stops turning," the show creator said.

This could mean a lot and the possibility of Henderson taking on (whether as Dr. Keeton or someone else new) the long-rumored "new love interest" for Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) remains to be seen.

"Grey's Anatomy" Season 12 is slated to premiere on Thursday, Sept. 24, at 8 p.m. on ABC.
