Infiniti Q60 Project Black S Release Date, Specs News: Concept With Formula One Tech to Debut at Geneva

Infiniti has partnered with the Renault Sport Formula One team to create the Q60 Project Black S, a new high-performance concept vehicle with Formula One-inspired technology and a hybrid powertrain.

"Infiniti is the premium car manufacturer within the Renault-Nissan Alliance, and a technical partner to the Renault Sport Formula One Team, so it is natural that we come together to explore the possibility of bringing innovative high-performance hybrid technology to our customers. Infiniti has constantly led the way in making innovative new powertrain technology available, and we're extremely excited by the potential of Project Black S," said Roland Krueger, president of Infiniti.

According to the automaker, Project Black S is an extreme version of the two-door Q60 coupe. It is equipped with a stunning aerodynamic design and a hybrid powertrain that could potentially be seen in Infiniti's future production cars.

The Project Black S comes with a performance hybrid powertrain that is based on dual-hybrid system usually used by Formula One cars. Infiniti's concept vehicle tries to replicate Renault's race car by featuring an "energy recovery system" that harvests energy and deploys recovered electric power to boost power and torque. This translates to instant and lag-free acceleration.

Performance is expected to be around 500 horsepower, which isn't at all surprising considering that the highest variant of the Q60 is capable of 400 horsepower via a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 engine. This powertrain also enables the vehicle to go from 0 to 60 miles per hour (mph) in five seconds.

At this time, there's no guarantee that Project Black S will make it into production. Infiniti announced that it will first gauge potential public interest during the concept vehicle's official introduction at the 87th Geneva International Motor Show. This will help the automaker determine if there is a demand for high-performance derivatives of Infiniti's cars.

The Infiniti Q60 Project Black S will be unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show on Monday, March 6 at 5 p.m. CET/11 a.m. EST.
