iOS 11 Emoji Bug Renders Messaging App Unusable

The iOS 11 had a troubled start earlier this September, and several months later, the iOS team is still cleaning up after bugs and performance issues. One of the latest complaints came up when users find that sending an emoji was enough to render the built-in messaging app unusable, after the iOS 11.2 update.

The iOS 11.2 update was supposed to address issues on the mobile software, but it looks like for every two bugs that the dev team manages to fix, one new issue would pop up. Just like the previous lowercase "i" debacle, the new bug comes up on the messaging app as well.

Earlier this month, users have reported on the MacRumors forum that when starting a fresh text thread, sending a message that only contains an emoji would render the messaging app unusable for some reason.

"The screen turns all white and the only way to get it back to normal is to quit the text (messaging app) and launch it again," the user explained, noting that the issue happens whether its an iPhone X, iPhone 7 or iPhone 5, as long as the OS is the iOS version 11.2.

"This is a major bug that needs to be fixed," the user added.

iOS version 11.2.1 has just been released this Wednesday. Dec. 13, to address a few issues. Unfortunately, the text emoji bug still remains, and when it happens, much of the interface disappears, from the main menu to the messages themselves.

The only way to bring them back is to force-close the messaging app and restart it. MacRumors was able to replicate the issue not only for the first iOS 11.2, but also for phones with iOS 11.2.1 and even the latest iOS 11.2.5.

Apple has not yet offered any comment about this issue, as of this time.
