Janis Joplin Role Goes to Tony Winner Nina Arianda

Nina Arianda has been the actress who will portray Janis Joplin in the upcoming biopic "Joplin" about the '60s singer.

The Tony-winning actress is best known for her role in Woody Allen's "Midnight in Paris," and she also appeared in Brett Ratner's "Tower Heist."

"Joplin" will begin filming next year with a budget of $20 million, according to Deadline.

The biopic will be Arianda's first starring role, although she won the Tony Award for Best Actress last year for her theatrical role in "Venus in Fur."

Additionally, the project will see Sean Durkin as director. He helmed the Sundance Film Festival favorite "Martha Marcy May Marlene."

Moreover, filmmakers have also obtained rights to original music by Joplin for the biopic. The film will feature "exclusive use of 21 of Joplin's best-known songs" which will be sung by Arianda, according to Spin.com.

Durkin has also obtained "the life rights and arrangements of [Joplin's] backing band, Big Brother and the Holding Company," as well as the singer's personal letters, called "Love, Janis" which were published in 2001.

Before Arianda landed "Joplin," actresses such as Amy Adams and Renee Zellweger were rumored to fill the role as the iconic singer.

Janis Joplin died of a drug overdose at age 27 in 1970. She was considered a trailblazer for her unconventional appearance and personal beliefs, and became a beatnik poet.

Although she only charted five singles in her life, Joplin's other popular songs from her 4-year career include "Down On Me," "Summertime," "Piece of My Heartm" and "Work Me, Lord," among many others.

At the height of her career, many hailed her as "The Queen of Rock and Roll."
