Julia Roberts 'Homecoming' TV Series News: 'Pretty Woman' Star Calls Movie A 'Total Experiment'

"Pretty Woman" star and America's sweetheart Julia Roberts will feature in her first full season TV series. "Homecoming" will begin filming in early 2018 for release on Amazon's streaming platform.

Roberts joins other big-named stars like Anthony Hopkins ("Westworld"), Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon ("Big Little Lies") who transitioned from big to small screen. The actress admitted she knows next to nothing about doing television but "Homecoming" is a like a "total experiment" for her.

"I don't even know what it really requires," Roberts stated. "I just know how to watch a TV show. I don't know how to make one."

The pull of television, however, piqued Roberts' interest because of the state of TV today. The Oscar-winning actress describes the platform as diverse with a lot of good content.

Her upcoming show is a psychological thriller based on a podcast, which started streaming on Gimlet Media in 2016. Roberts will play a staff in a secret government facility that facilitates the reintegration of soldiers into society after a tour of duty.

"Mr. Robot" showrunner Sam Esmail will direct and executive produce "Homecoming." Details on casting and air date have not yet been announced.

"Homecoming" is the second show Roberts signed up for. The "Eat, Pray, Love" star will also headline an HBO miniseries. "Today Will Be Different" is based on a book from Maria Semple and the author will also be writing her story for the small screen.

Roberts will play Eleanor Flood in "Today Will Be Different," who tries to have the best day despite a lot of hiccups. The show will take place in one single event.

This series will mark Roberts return to HBO, where she once did a TV movie special, "The Normal Heart," in 2014. Roberts also had guest appearances on "Friends," "Murphy Brown" and "Law & Order" in the 1990s.
