'Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle' Movie Plot Replaces the Board Game With a Video Game

When one talks about "Jumanji," one instantly thinks about the beloved board game that turns consequences into reality. In the upcoming sequel, "Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle," the concept of game-turned-into-actuality is still there, although the method has been changed.

During the CinemaCon 2017 held at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, Nevada from March 27–30, the second installment graced the occasion with a five-minute clip that had everyone shocked yet positively excited. It revealed that instead of the board game, the movie has traded it off with a video game console.

According to The Wrap, the story revolves around four headstrong, mischievous high school teens who get themselves in trouble and are thrown into detention. While serving their time, they discover a console that transports them to the magical world of Jumanji. In that domain, they appear as their alter-egos played by Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black and Karen Gillan.

This is a huge change from the original film, and a big gamble at that. It can be recalled that in the first movie, two kids find a board game, only to cause the young boy, who eventually grows up to be Robin Williams, sucked in the game for a long time. It will be interesting to see how they pull off this change.

Despite the fact that this was a totally new game, director Jake Kasdan still considers it to be somewhat a sequel to the first one.

Kasdan tells Deadline, "'Jumanji' is the kind of movie that I think people shouldn't out-and-out remake. To me, a big part of its power is in the unique elements of its original execution. Within that, I think there's this central idea and mythology that's mysterious, but powerful, and commands a powerful part of the imagination."

"Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle" arrives in cinemas on Dec. 20, 2017.
