'King of Fighters XIV' Release Date Revealed, as SNK Playmore Becomes SNK Once More

On Monday, SNK, formerly SNK Playmore, made two important announcements. First, it changed its name back to SNK, simplified its logo, and brought back its old slogan. Second, it revealed the launch date of its upcoming fighter game "King of Fighters XIV."

SNK dropped "Playmore" from its corporate name as a sign of its return to its developer-publisher roots. Meanwhile, it's old slogan "The Future Is Now" captures the company's new message.

"This change marks a return to SNK's rich gaming history. Through the huge success of many of its game franchises in the past, SNK is still a brand supported by countless fans from around the world to this day," SNK said in a press release. "The new logo and slogan chosen for this turning point, signifies both a return to the origins of SNK, and revival of our pioneer spirit to always offer long-time fans of SNK, as well as newcomers, entertainment of an even higher quality moving forward."

SNK is the company behind a number of popular games like "Metal Slug," "Fatal Fury," and "King of Fighters." Speaking of the last one, the company is set to release the latest entry in the series, "King of Fighters XIV," on Aug. 23 through publisher Atlus.

The game will have a huge roster consisting of 50 fighters, 31 of them are returning fighters and 19 of them are new like Sylvie and Shun'ei, "a mysterious young fighter who will have a key role in the game's story." Shun'ei was introduced in a new trailer along with Nakoruru of "Samurai Shodown."

"King of Fighters XIV" will launch to Sony's PlayStation 4 exclusively for $59.99. The game will be available as a day-one, pre-order limited edition in the Americas which includes a physical copy of the game in a collectible SteelBook case. A Classic Kyo DLC costume will also be free to download for the week following launch.
