10 Christian Democrats running on their faith in the Nov. 3 midterm elections

Two Senate nominees, a Texas seminarian and a Kansas megachurch pastor, lead a wave of Democrats running on their faith in Tuesday’s midterm elections.
The two highest-profile tests of that strategy are in deep-red states. In Texas, state Rep. James Talarico, a seminary student, is trying to become the first Democrat to win a U.S. Senate race there since 1988. In Kansas, liberal United Methodist Church Pastor Adam Hamilton is seeking a Senate seat his party hasn’t won since 1932.
President Donald Trump has said Hamilton “openly mocks Jesus” and has criticized Talarico over a 2021 podcast in which he called himself a “Christian who hates Christianity.” GOP leaders have also argued that several of the candidates hold views on abortion and sexuality at odds with the beliefs of many Christian voters, particularly Evangelicals, who have backed Republicans by wide margins for decades.
