Texas state Rep. James Talarico, D-Austin, a lifelong member of the progressive denomination Presbyterian Church (USA) and the winner of a Democratic primary against Rep. Jasmine Crockett, D-Texas, is mounting a high-profile challenge to Attorney General Ken Paxton in one of the most watched Senate races of the 2026 midterms.

In June, the Democratic nominee’s campaign announced it had raised $30 million in the last three months, tripling the fundraising haul announced by Paxton.

Hoping to become Texas' first Democratic U.S. senator in over three decades, Talarico has faced significant criticism over his past statements about Christianity, most recently from Trump, over comments Talarico made in a 2021 podcast calling himself a "Christian who hates Christianity."
