As Paris entered evening and the fire was still raging, crowds gathered around the burning cathedral offered a myriad of responses to the blaze. One of them was singing.

A video of many in the crowd singing the classic song “Ave Maria” was posted to Twitter soon after the fire, quickly garnering over 3.5 million views.

The video of the singing was described by many on social media as “powerful” and “moving,” being shared widely online as a result.
