Pet Food Recall 2013: Mass Salmonella Risk Sparks Recall of Natura Pet Products

A pet food recall has been expanded as fears of a mass spread of salmonella among animals and people increases.

Natura Pet Products has confirmed that it is expanding a recall of its dry pet foods because of the risk of salmonella, which has sparked fears among pet owners.

Natura Pet Products, a unit of Procter & Gamble Co., announced a voluntary recall last month in March, stating that there were concerns about its dog, cat and ferret foods. It stated at that time that the products may be contaminated with salmonella bacteria.

The company has now expanded that announcement and is now recalling all dry pet food products and treats that have an expiration date prior to and including March 24, 2014.

The pet food obviously has risks to pets, but also to people who come into contact and might handle the products.

Anyone with concerns about the salmonella risk are being advised to ensure they thoroughly wash their hands after handling any of the products, but are asked to abide by the recall and dispose of any affected products.

Pets who get infected with salmonella could suffer symptoms such as becoming lethargic, and could develop diarrhea or even bloody diarrhea. Other symptoms also include fever and vomiting.

Most pets who are infected will suffer a decrease in appetite, and could develop fever and abdominal pain.

It is also possible that some infected pets remain healthy but act as carriers and infect other animals and humans.

Any pet owners that are concerned their pet may be infected or has come into contact with any of the recalled products are advised to contact a veterinarian.

Any humans who become infected with salmonella may suffer nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, as well as abdominal cramps and fever.

The company was quick to point out that the current recall only includes dry pet foods and treats only, and that no canned wet food or biscuits are affected.

The products have been sold in the U.S., Canada, Hong Kong, Korea, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, Australia and Costa Rica, as well as online.
