Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic Shooting: 5 Injured, Including Cop

A Pittsburgh hospital experienced a shooting Thursday afternoon. At least five people were shot, and it is currently unknown how many others are injured.

It is unknown how many gunmen there are, or the reasons behind the rampage. More than five victims could be revealed as the story breaks, according to The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Someone fired out shots at the Western Psychiatric Institute in Oakland, Pennsylvania, killing one person, and injuring others- one of whom was a police officer. The officer was shot above the knee, according to WTAE News of Pittsburgh.

He was taken to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital which was close to the clinic, and his condition is unknown.

Emergency services received a 911 call of a victim being threatened at gunpoint Thursday afternoon at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital, which is in the vicinity of the psychiatric building.

In response to the gruesome shooting, the University of Pittsburgh offered a grave, brief warning to students and faculty to keep them out of harm's way.

"An active shooter has been identified at the Western Psychiatric Institute. Several injured; possible 2nd actor in Western Psych. Lock-down recommended until further notice. If safe to do so, tell others of this message," read the warning.

Currently, a SWAT team has been deployed to search the building and grounds for another possible shooter. One person is dead inside the building- possibly the gunman.

Central Catholic high school and Oakland Catholic high schools have been warned of the tragedy in an effort to contain the situation.
