PlayStation All-Stars: Battle Royale is Sony's Super Smash Bros.

Sony is adopting Nintendo's Super Smash Bros. formula with the announcement of its upcoming game PlayStation All-Stars: Battle Royale.

The game will mash-up some of Sony's most popular PlayStation characters and pit them against each other in a Super Smash Bros.-styled fighting game 13 years after the Nintendo title became a huge hit.

SuperBot Entertainment, PlayStation All-Stars: Battle Royale's developer, introduced the game earlier this week, giving the public a first look at it at a Los Angeles media event.

The game was tested out by the publication, Entertainment Weekly, who enjoyed the title.

"The game's a blast, though your mileage will obviously vary depending on your passion for side-scrolling brawlers," said EW.

The playable characters at the media event included God of War's Kratos, Twisted Metal's Sweet Tooth, Sly Cooper, Mael Radec of Killzone 2, Fat Princess and PaRappa the Rapper from his self titled 90s hit hip-hop karaoke game.

It also features maps from some of PlayStations hit titles including Metropolis from Ratchet and Clank, Sandover Village from Jak and Daxter, Dreamscape from LittleBigPlanet, and Hades from God of War.

The levels also change frequently during game play and borrow other assets from Sony titles. An example of this would be the hydra from God of War randomly appearing the in Metropolis level from Ratchet and Clank. A tribe of Patapon warriors will also show up in the Hades level.

The controls for the game are quite basic with X as the jump button and square, triangle and circle being for various attacks when used in conjunction with the directional pad or analog stick.

PlayStation All-Stars: Battle Royale will launch during the holiday season. Sony has not confirmed any other playable characters aside from the ones that were playable at the event.
