Accomplished neurosurgeon and former presidential candidate Dr. Ben Carson garnered controversy in 2015 when evidence surfaced that he lifted portions of various works for his 2012 book America the Beautiful.

Sources that he took from without proper citation included the website SocialismSucks.net, a Liberty Institute press release, and William Federer's book America's God and Country.

In January of 2015, Carson apologized for the plagiarism, stating "I attempted to appropriately cite and acknowledge all sources in America the Beautiful, but inadvertently missed some."

For his part, Federer came to the defense of Carson, explaining in an email to CNN that he had given Carson permission to use portions of his work.

"I told him that I hoped he would find them interesting and that he had full permission to use any of the material in the books as he liked," explained Federer.
