Robin Roberts Talks About Triumphant Return to TV, Importance of Oscars

Robin Roberts made a triumphant return to "Good Morning America" last week and has now spoken out about that special day. She gave a personal interview after the first show taped and explained why it was so important for her to get back to TV when she did.

"I wanted to really get back before the Oscars because it was at the Oscars last year that I started to go downhill," she explained to TV Guide. "For me psychologically, and talking to my doctors – they said it would be a tremendous boost to know that in a year's time that I was back there and well on the road to recovery."

And Roberts did meet that goal. She walked the red carpet during last night's Oscars, much to the cheers and goodwill of the crowd. Roberts spent 174 days off of TV and largely out of the public eye while she underwent a bone marrow transplant. She shared her diagnosis of myelodysplastic syndrome with the "GMA" audience and never shied away from sharing its affect on her life.

"There is no handbook for this, but I'm pleased with how we handled it. We did it the best way we knew how," Roberts said. "That was to be authentic. I love my work; I want to be here. I want to be with my friends. I want to join in the fun."

She had a very special welcome back to ABC and "GMA," with actors from various shows on the channel taping "Welcome Back" promos. When Roberts finally appeared on the show, she was shown a special message from President Barack and First Lady Michelle Obama.

Fans expressed their excitement at seeing Roberts walk the red carpet last night and welcomed her back with open arms.

"Welcome back, Robin Roberts!" Kristin Chenoweth tweeted.

"Hey Robin Roberts! You look great!" added Hoda Kotb.

"Robin Roberts, you look stunning. I am in awe of your courage and strength. You have inspired so many, including myself. God bless you," tweeted Ali Landry.
