When Stephen Daldry approached Sandra Bullock for a role in his upcoming movie “Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close" the actress wasn’t sure she was interested in returning to acting at all.

"I was perfectly content to be permanently broken," said Bullock. "I honestly didn't think I was in a place where I wanted to work or wanted to step out of where I was.”

The star had taken a break from acting in 2010 after she discovered her husband of five years, reality star Jesse James, was having an affair with Michelle McGee as well as other women. She divorced him immediately after.

The part Daldry offered was as a supporting role, where Bullock would play the mother of boy whose father had died on September 11. The actress described the opportunity as louder than her head.

Bullock’s last role was in the 2009 film “Blindside” for which she won the Academy Award as best actress. The award would have marked a highpoint in her career if later scandal hadn’t ensued over her then husband’s infidelities.

"Painfully, you learn quickly in life that sometimes there are no answers and you learn to make peace with that, which is a lifelong struggle," Bullock told the Los Angeles Daily News.

“Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close" which opened in limited release on Christmas Day, will open nationwide on January 20.

Bullock has now made a full comeback, after finishing a second movie, Alfonso Cuaron's “Gravity,” a space thriller co-starring George Clooney. She said her returning role in “Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close” was “a great way to get back on the horse.”

"It was hard, but it was what it's supposed to be,” said Bullock.
