'Sherlock' Season 4 Release Date News: Christmas Episode to Kick Off New Season

The fourth season of BBC's hit crime drama series "Sherlock" will kick off with a one-off special Christmas episode, set to be aired by end of 2015. Production for the special episode has been reported to have started in early January 2015, on Baker Street in London, in Bristol and in the historic Gloucester Cathedral, according to reports.

The cast were seen donning Victorian-era costumes, with Benedict Cumberbatch wearing the iconic deerstalker hat as well as a top hat, in some of the scenes shot in Bristol. Martin Freeman on the other hand was seen wearing a bowler hat, a three-piece suit and what one report described as a "rather sizable moustache," far from what his character, Dr. John Watson originally looked like in the series.

Another report on the Mirror mentioned that the cast was seen shooting on location this time at the Gloucester Cathedral. The cast were still dressed in Victorian-era clothing and one source inside the Church revealed that they had brought in a single bed into the other props into the crypt before filming.

While plot details about the new season are still under wraps, a report on iDigitalTimes bravely puts together what it thinks will happen based on different declarations and pronouncements made by the show's producers and cast. Steven Moffatt, one of the show's producers, told Entertainment Weekly that their "plan" was to "top Season 3."

"And I do think our plan is devastating. We've practically reduced our cast to tears telling them the plan … we're probably more excited that we've ever been about Sherlock," he said. He continues by saying that this new season will be "darker," by "taking it somewhere we've never been before."

Other interesting spoilers mentioned in the report have to do with the women characters in the show – the possibility that Mary, Dr. Watson's wife will die, if they were to follow the original Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's storyline; the possible return of Janine, Sherlock's love interest in an earlier season; and the possible return of Irene Adler.

The report also cited the real reason why an airing date for the next season is not yet fixed and this has to do with the schedules of the cast especially that of lead actors Cumberbatch and Freeman. Both are busy with their own movie careers in Hollywood.
