10. Church mourns pastor and wife who died trying to save son from drowning at beach
Felisberto Sampaio, who served as pastor of the Assembly of God Church in Quixaba, Paraiba, Brazil, died on Jan. 10 as he and his wife, Inalda, attempted to save their teenage son from drowning at a beach in the Paraiba city of Lucena. While a fisherman and another family member were able to rescue the boy, his parents “were not pulled from the water in time.”
Leonardo Meneses, a pastor at the church that the family had frequently attended, acknowledged that “the circumstances are painful and difficult for us to understand,” adding that “only eternity will explain all the mysteries of life.” The Sampaios’ eldest son said, “The thing that goes through people’s minds is that it’s all a lie.”
