9. Housekeeper’s husband murders Catholic bishop

Bishop David O’Connell of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles was shot to death in February. The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office charged Carlos Medina, the husband of O’Connell’s housekeeper, with one count of murder in connection with the crime.

Although the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Office acknowledged that Medina gave “several different reasons” for killing O’Connell, the law enforcement agency maintained that “none of them made sense to investigators.” As for O’Connell, a series of funeral events were held to commemorate the life of the beloved clergyman.

“He served multiple congregations, where he helped and personally impacted the lives of thousands of Angelinos. He was committed to those who were the most vulnerable in our community,” said Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascon. “He worked with the immigrant community; he worked with communities that were impacted by gang violence; he selflessly gave his life to this community.”
