This week marks the anniversary of when Clive Staples Lewis, bestselling fantasy author and noted Christian apologist, decided to become a Christian after several days of discernment.

The seeds had been sown days earlier when Lewis had engaged in considerable conversation and debate with fellow English professors Hugo Dyson and author J.R.R. Tolkien.

At issue were philosophical questions, including the nature of myth, the concept of love and friendship, and the power of sacrifice, as seen in both pagan stories and Christianity..

On Sept. 28, Lewis was riding in the sidecar of his brother’s motorcycle as the two were traveling to the newly opened Whipsnade Park Zoo in Bedfordshire, England.

“I know very well when, but not how, the final step was taken. I was driven to Whipsnade one sunny morning,” Lewis later recounted.

“When we set out, I did not believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, and when we reached the zoo, I did.”
