Tony Romo Has Jerry Jones' Backing Despite Chris Cooley Criticism
After the Dallas Cowboys let go of a 24 point lead against the Detroit Lions at home on Sunday, Washington Redskins’ tight end, Chris Cooley, had a lot of criticism for Cowboys’ QB Tony Romo.
Cooley appeared on the “The LaVar Arrington radio show with Chad Dukes” recently to speak about the inconsistent performances of Tony Romo, the Cowboy’s starting QB.
"I was watching the scoreboard in St. Louis (where the Redskins were playing), (and) I didn't see that they'd lost really until the end -- I thought (the Cowboys) blew (the Lions) out, so I kind of stopped paying attention. It's amazing, amazing to watch him choke like that," Cooley said on the show.
"I'm just saying, I'm up 24 points in the third quarter, if I'm a head coach, I feel like I can probably just take a knee for the rest of the game, punt it away. And there's no way that Detroit is gonna drive on you that many times. The only way you're gonna give up that many points is turnovers, right?”
The TE admitted that he enjoyed watching Romo have difficulties on the field.
"It was hilarious to watch him throw pick-sixes, too, back to back,” Cooley said. “I loved it."
This has not been the first time Romo’s issues on the field have been criticized publicly.
Charean Williams, NFL writer, spoke about Romo’s lack of skills.
“In his past 10 starts, Romo is 3-7,” Williams wrote. “Four of the losses were games in which Romo had at least two turnovers, including both Cowboys’ losses this season.”
Despite the overwhelming amount of criticism, Cowboys’ owner Jerry Jones, maintained confidence in his QB’s abilities.
"There have been other great quarterbacks that certainly can make mistakes, and I think there is a process that is going on, we all should and do have a reservoir of past mistakes we've made and I think we can improve as we go along," Jones said, according to Dallas' 105.3 The Fan.
"But the most important thing, the very individual Tony Romo that we are criticizing this week gives us our very best chance to have a championship."
