3. Trump highlights persecution of Christians at the UN General Assembly
In a speech at the U.N. General Assembly on Tuesday, Trump highlighted the persecution of Christians across the globe.
“Christians are being persecuted all over the world; it’s not even believable. I never thought I’d say it, but it’s been happening for a long time," he said.
Describing the persecution of Christians as “crimes of the world’s most repressive regimes,” Trump condemned the U.N. Human Rights Council, calling its members “craven hypocrites” who “have little to say about the topic.”
The president also discussed the ongoing war in Iran, saying he could either make a deal “that lets them rebuild and create a far greater country than it ever was before” or “annihilate the Islamic Republic."
Trump told world leaders he could “drive them into Hell with no chance of survival and no hope of future greatness or generations.”
Trump drew applause when he rejected the idea that the upcoming U.S. midterm elections were influencing his handling of the conflict.
“It doesn’t even enter my mind," he said. "The only thing that does is that Iran will never have a nuclear weapon.”
