5. Trump meets with Xi Jinping
After returning to Washington, Trump hosted China's President Xi Jinping.
He greeted the Chinese Communist Party leader at an arrival ceremony at Joint Base Andrews on Wednesday and welcomed him to the White House on Thursday. The two leaders delivered remarks at the White House, where Trump noted that Xi is the first Chinese leader to make more than one formal state visit to the U.S. Trump said Thursday marked the first time the two had met at the White House.
Trump noted that Xi’s visit comes as the U.S. celebrates the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. He said the two leaders would visit the National Archives together, then outlined their efforts to improve trade between the two countries. He named “security technology” and artificial intelligence as other issues they plan to focus on during the state visit.
“If we focus on our common interests, I am confident there is much we can achieve. Throughout history, pursuit of those common interests has connected our people across the vast oceans,” Trump said.
Xi congratulated the U.S. on its 250th anniversary and said: “The interests of China and the United States are deeply intertwined.”
“There is plenty of room for us to work together,” Xi said. “China-U.S. cooperation may not solve every problem in the world, but without our cooperation, it would be hard to solve many of the world’s problems.”
