In a message posted on Truth Social Tuesday, Trump announced that former U.S. Marine Robert Gilman, who has been imprisoned in Russia since 2022, would return to the U.S. after his discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

"Russia has agreed to release him, very much on a Humanitarian Basis. We appreciate this decision, and the fact that Russia asked for no one in return,” he wrote.

Trump indicated that Gilman was flying home from Russia to the U.S. and was slated to arrive at Joint Base Andrews that evening. He also highlighted how Gilman “has been reunited with his wonderful mother, Nancy, who is also on the plane with him, and will soon get to see all of his loved ones."

The president identified several members of his administration, including Special Envoy for Peace Missions Steve Witkoff, Special Envoy for Hostage Response Adam Boehler, Senior Director for Counterterrorism Sebastian Gorka and his son-in-law Jared Kushner as part of the team who “made this possible.”

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio provided additional details about Gilman’s release and said he plans to secure the release of additional Americans detained overseas. In a statement Tuesday, he stressed that “While we appreciate this positive step, we are still seeking the immediate return of all other unjustly detained Americans, including wrongful detainee Stephen Hubbard.”
