One of several events taking place to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, the Patriot Games were held in Geneva, Ohio, this week. The event kicked off Sunday and concluded Tuesday.
As explained by Freedom 250, the organization responsible for much of the America 250 celebrations, the Patriot Games were “a national athletic competition celebrating the character, determination, and excellence that define the American spirit” designed to “bring together outstanding young Americans from across the nation to compete, inspire, and showcase the values that have shaped the United States for nearly 250 years.”
The competition was open to high school athletes between the ages of 14 and 17 from all U.S. states and territories.
The top prize in the competition, available to one male and one female athlete, was a $125,000 scholarship. Athletes participated in a variety of activities including kickball, dodgeball, tug of war, an obstacle course and the presidential fitness test. The Patriot Games were available for viewing on the ESPN App, and a one-hour primetime special featuring the competition aired on ESPN and ABC Thursday night. The winners of the competition are slated to be revealed during the primetime special.
