The White House hosted a gathering Thursday in honor of Women’s History Month, which is celebrated in March. The event featured remarks from first lady Melania Trump, who praised her husband for demonstrating “a strong commitment to promoting women in leadership roles” as she introduced the president.

“Going all the way back to our nation’s founding in 1776, America has been strengthened beyond measure by the courage, by the spirit, love, devotion and the incredible women,” Trump proclaimed. He named several “incredible women who have served our nation, uplifted our communities, pioneered new industries and been the heart and soul of the American family,” including Martha Washington, Betsy Ross, Clara Barton, Amelia Earhart, Rosa Parks and Aretha Franklin.

Echoing the rhetoric used in his State of the Union address last month, Trump maintained that his administration’s economic policies have benefited American women. He introduced Heather Kell, a single mother of a teenage son from Hendersonville, North Carolina, who received a $4,000 tax refund as a result of the administration’s signature economic package, the One Big Beautiful Bill Act.

Several other women also spoke at the event, including Michelle Cook, the sheriff of Clay County, Florida, and Olympic bobsledder Kaillie Humphries. Humphries presented Trump with the Order of Ikkos, which Olympic medalists can present to someone in honor and recognition of a person who made a meaningful contribution to their journey to the podium.

Humphries said Trump deserved the award because of his advocacy for keeping men out of women’s sports as well as his administration’s efforts to ensure greater access to in vitro fertilization, which she said helped her start a family.
