4. Department of Education finds Colorado school district violated Title IX

In a statement Friday, the U.S. Department of Education announced that its Office for Civil Rights found Jefferson County Public Schools in Jefferson County, Colorado, violated Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 by allowing trans-identified male students to share sleeping accommodations with female students on overnight field trips, as well as allowing them to use women’s restrooms and locker rooms and compete on women’s sports teams.

“Today’s findings reveal sweeping Title IX violations by Jefferson County Public Schools — denying fairness and equality to female students by allowing males into their private facilities, overnight accommodations and athletics. The district’s decision to prioritize ‘gender identity’ over ensuring equal access for its female students is unconscionable,” said Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights Kimberly Richey. “The district must act now to end these violations and protect future generations of girls from sex discrimination.”

Richey vowed that “the Trump administration will not relent until female athletes’ safety, opportunities and equal protection under the law are fully restored.” The Department of Education ordered the school district to resolve its Title IX violations within 10 days or “risk imminent enforcement action.”

The Department of Education’s findings that Jefferson County Public Schools violated Title IX come after the school district became the subject of a lawsuit alleging it forced an 11-year-old girl to share a bed with a trans-identified male student on an overnight school field trip and allowed a female school counselor who identifies as “non-binary” to supervise boys’ showers on a camping trip.
