Trump's week in review: Showdown with South Africa, Big Beautiful Bill, Make America Healthy Again
‘One Big Beautiful Bill Act’ and defunding Planned Parenthood
The U.S. House of Representatives passed House Resolution 1, also known as the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” by a narrow margin of 215-214 on Thursday morning following late-night negotiations. The wide-ranging bill spans more than 1,100 pages and would enact the tax and spending priorities of Trump, who urged the GOP-controlled U.S. Senate to pass the bill quickly.
Trump hailed the bill as “arguably the most significant piece of Legislation that will ever be signed in the History of our Country” in a post on Truth Social. Critics claimed the bill would balloon the federal deficit by trillions and endanger healthcare coverage for millions. The bill also aimed at beefing up border security, allocating $4 billion for 3,000 new Border Patrol agents.
The bill contains a provision to strip federal funding from abortion behemoth Planned Parenthood, which drew mostly positive reactions from pro-life and Christian leaders, though Katie Brown Xavios of the American Life League maintained that "this bill is not the full win it's being portrayed to be,” noting that it would "still fund Planned Parenthood for abortions in the cases of rape, incest, and the mother's health."
